Britt at her home in Los Angeles

By Jan-Willem Dikkers

Connecticut born actor Britt Baron got her start with the Steppenwolf Theatre Company in Chicago. She currently stars as Justine on the acclaimed Netflix series GLOW. I met Britt at her home in Los Angeles.

How did you get started as an actor?
I always wanted to be an actor. I trained as an actor in college and during our graduation weekend, we performed an accumulation of scenes from different genres and playwrights that we had studied. I took a clown class my senior year, and I decided to perform an incredibly ridiculous improv scene as my clown character. When I say ridiculous, I mean I was wearing white velcro sneakers that were about six sizes too big, striped pajama shorts, a tucked in purple silk shirt with drawings of different purses all over it and a winter hat, just to give you the full picture. I didn’t know that an LA-based agent was in the audience that night, thank God, or I probably wouldn’t have chosen to perform as my clown. But after the show she began sending me out on self-taped auditions, and when I moved to Los Angeles she signed me officially. So I guess clowning helped me get my professional start as an actor?

What do you most like about your line of work?
The characters I get to play and the storytelling.

What inspires you?
The world! People. I love when I am in cities where everyone is walking around because observing other people and their behavior is really the best fuel for an actor. Books. Even just a poignant line from a book or song can be immensely inspiring. History, stories, my own life experiences, movies, documentaries, fellow artists, a good sunset.

What do you like most about GLOW and playing your character Justine?
Oh that’s hard! I guess what I like most are my fellow cast members. These women are so extraordinary. They are kind, supportive, talented, driven, hilarious, intelligent and just some of the best people I have ever known. These are women who I hope to be friends with for the rest of my life. The best part about playing Justine is her contradicting characteristics. She’s incredibly closed off, with this tough girl exterior, and at the same time incredibly vulnerable and insecure. I love being able to play around with all of that! Also I love the costumes I get to wear. The amazing vintage band t-shirts, beat up Converse, and that black jumper! When you are on set for 14 hours a day, I can’t tell you how fortunate I felt to be able to basically be in pajamas everyday.

How would you describe your style?
Pretty laid back. Casual chic? I actually don’t even really know what that means. I think I read that phrase on a blog. I usually just wear high waisted jeans and a T-shirt or tank top with a cool jacket and some sort of sneaker. I rarely wear bright colors. My wardrobe is a lot of neutral earth tones.

Do you recall your first favorite T-shirt?
Yes! It was a white *NSYNC T-shirt with a photo of the whole band posing in front of a blue background. I got it at my first concert at Six Flags Darien Lake. I actually still have the shirt and wear it sometimes with high waisted jeans. I love it!

What’s next for you?
Obviously I’m hoping for a season two of GLOW. Fingers crossed. I would love to do some film work and voice overs. If I could fit in some time for traveling that would be amazing. There’s so much of the world to see!
